This is a different kind of countdown chain because each time you take off a link you solve a math problem.
You’ll need: colored paper,scissors & glue
To assemble:
Print out the links below on colored paper or paper with Christmas designs.
Cut out the 24 links and glue together in a chain.
Begin on December 1st cutting off link number one and do the math problem.
Continue removing a link each day and doing the math problem. When there are no links on the chain left, the next day will be Christmas.
This was always a tradition in our home. Now the grands are doing it. The glue makes for a longer hands on activity but we have started using a small stapler to make the links.
Last year I helped some children at church make a chain with a different purpose. As a group activity the children each made a link (you could do links depending on the size of your group) and wrote something they would do to as a gift for Jesus before Christmas.
They each came forward shared their gift and then added it to the group chain. We then hung the very long chain at the front of our meeting room where they could see it each Sunday in December.
Grandma Shelley, those are great ideas. I’m going to use the idea about the gift for Jesus at our family Christmas party. Thanks for sharing.
What a clever idea with the math problems. I love to sneak learning into fun projects. I have used Shelley’s suggestion before with church children too, and with my own children when they were small.
